WesternGrit Endorses...

Ralph Goodale for Leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.

That's right.  If we're picking an "interim" leader, we should do ourselves the favor of selecting the man that has worked the major cabinet posts, can carry a "gun" to a "gun fight", and can speak circles around Harper.

Mr. Goodale is a Westerner who has demonstrated love for integrity, prudence (fiscal and otherwise), and deep desire to keep building this nation.  He is a brilliant tactician, witty, and the perfect "ying" to Harper's "yang".  At a time when Conservatives are trying to sell to "the rest" of Canada the line that Ontario and Quebec conspired to defeat their minority government, we can't do better than to insert as our leader a gun-slinger from a semi-rural riding in Western Canada.  Let Harper gripe about Ontario and Quebec in the meantime.

In Parliament, what we need for "interim" leadership, or simply leadership at this point, is someone who has the skills to keep order and discipline in the party, while ensuring the party agenda is spoken to.  No-one is better than the House Leader, for this task.  No-one is better than a man who knows the ins and outs of Parliament, and has been an MP since the age of 25.

Some will argue that "he supports someone" in the leadership.  I say, "bs".  Like many MPs, he has not declared ANYTHING at this point in the race.  If we were to go by the last leadership contest, then there is nary a Liberal who was not committed to someone.

The party will do ourselves a disservice by allowing either of the two contestants to serve as "interim" leader.  We need to select another MP.  This MP could also be allowed to stand for the leadership role, once the "temporary" role is finished.  Heck, if he/she does a good job, the members-at-large may just want them to carry on.

My choice - and this blog's endorsement (for what it's worth) goes to Ralph Goodale, MP, Wascana.

He's a good guy but doesn't speak French.

Funny, isn't it - getting in bed with the NDP who tried to destroy him.

I think the notion of an "interim" leader has pretty much gone by the boards. While Ignatieff will technically be such until he's "confirmed" at the convention, for all intents and purposes, he'll be the "permanent" leader.

I agree wholeheartedly, let Ralph smack Chicken Steve around while we pick our new leader.

I like and respect Ralp Goodale, but if he were interim leader, what if an election was called ?
